About us

What we do

Alcohol Research UK merged with Alcohol Concern in April 2017 to become the UK’s leading independent alcohol charity. We seek to reduce alcohol-related harm by ensuring that policy and practice can always be developed on the basis of reliable, research-based evidence. We provide grants to people working at the cutting-edge of alcohol-harm prevention, whether undertaking research, testing out new ideas or running projects that help to disseminate high quality evidence. Through our studentship scheme, we also invest in promising researchers embarking on a career in the field.

All our research findings are publicly available on this website, as well as being published in peer-reviewed journals and independent reports. We are committed to disseminating research findings to all stakeholders: policymakers, practitioners, scientists, campaigners, business, academics and many others. That way we can help ensure that public knowledge, frontline delivery and both national and local policymaking is well informed and based on reliable, research-based, evidence.

We also provide ongoing support to two major programmes developing knowledge around alcohol issues: The Alcohol Academy and Drug and Alcohol Findings.

Our people

Alcohol Research UK is governed by an independent board of Trustees. All grant proposals are assessed by external referees and an independent Grants Advisory Panel. Full information on our governance and board structure is available here.

Day-to-day management is delegated to a small team of staff.
