PhD Studentship – Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Southampton

The experiences and recovery needs of alcohol dependent patients following detoxification programmes (POST DETOX):  an exploratory qualitative study
4 Year PhD Studentship

The University of Southampton (Faculty of Health Sciences)

The study presents a unique opportunity to describe NHS alcohol recovery programmes and patients’ experience, needs and use over time of two programmes (hospital and community based) following an outpatient hospital based detoxification programme. It will also explore the views of service providers. The findings for this research will help to provide an evidence base that can be used to inform specialist alcohol treatment service commissioners of need, resources and outcomes. Additionally it will help to inform the formulation of alcohol recovery pathways to support patients during this period with widespread applicability across the whole of the NHS.

This study will employ a mixed methods approach in two stages. Stage one will constitute an NHS Wessex-wide scoping exercise to describe hospital based alcohol recovery services. This will be set (theoretically) within the context of national alcohol recovery services. Stage two, a qualitative study, will adopt an ethnographic and longitudinal approach to identify the support provided for behavioural change during post-detoxification appointments over time. In addition, detailed descriptors of the experiences and needs of those patients following hospital or community based recovery pathways will be identified. The views of service providers will also be studied.

The successful candidate will spend two days per week as a Band 5 Registered Nurse in the Medical Unit, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and 3 days per week working on the PhD research study. You will join a thriving and expanding group of Clinical Academic Doctoral Fellows using the purpose built Clinical Academic Facilities, Southampton General Hospital and Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH), Portsmouth.
